The Medical Industry:
My Specialty.
Would you go to a dermatologist and expect them to cure your back pain?
Just as doctors, translators choose what to specialize in. As for me, I chose to specialize in the medical field, where experience, precision and terminological knowledge are of paramount importance. I have been a translator in this field for years, working as a linguistic and cultural mediator during consultations, sight-translating medical documents, interpreting at medical conferences and translating numerous texts about the medical and pharmaceutical industries and related products, be it for research or marketing purposes. This has given me the opportunity to gain relevant experience in this field and learn important medical concepts, which allows me to translate complex technical texts correctly and effectively. Indeed, as explained by Muthu in Translationes (Vol 15 /2023, Issue 2/2023), “during the translation process, terminological knowledge is essential since the information conveyed by a scientific and technical writing is encoded in terms which give access to more elaborate knowledge structures”. This means that translating scientific and technical texts (e.g. medical texts) requires substantial knowledge not only about the morphosyntactic structures of a given language, but also about the topic of the text (Muthu, 2023). That is why choosing a specialized translator with relevant experience can really make a difference, avoiding potentially serious and embarrassing misunderstandings. Moreover, thanks to my work experience, I can count on a wide network of healthcare professionals, which gives me the opportunity to ask a specialist whenever I need specific consultation about a medical term or concept. This is a great advantage in addition to translator-client communication, which I deem equally important. Finally - and most importantly - thanks to my professional experience I now know how to find the right terms and concepts and how to recognise a suitable translation option.
Whether you need a written translation, an interpreter, an editor or a proofreader in the medical or pharmaceutical industry, I’ve got you covered. My areas of specialization include scientific research, medical reports, medical technology, clinical trials, medical conferences, professional articles, medical and pharmaceutical products (e.g. information sheets or package inserts) and more.
